Making things official.
Flash back to March 2018, Greg surprised me with a house viewing- we hadn’t even been seriously looking and I was seriously ill. As the realtor showed us around the property, our one-time daydreams began to seem like a tangible possibility.
Since buying the property in June 2018, we have slowly been making our visions a reality. We tore down fence and buildings. Buried power lines. Reconfigured irrigation. Moved more lava rock than we thought was even possible- and yet there is so much more to move still.
We’ve learned to work around our deer friends and rebuilt 10’ fences around what is now the home of the farm’s vegetable, fruit and flower garden. We have only tapped into a quarter of the garden space with eight raised beds for the 2020 season. We had tomatoes, collard greens, peppers, squash, and zucchini coming out of ears. I was thankful for my canner, dehydrator, recipes, adventurous eaters (the girls), as well as friends and neighbors doing a little u-pick. In 2021, we are going to tap into the ground to plant the corn, sprawling squashes, and potatoes. This expansion will let us use plant more in the raised beds to expand into the Farmers Markets.
We converted the old chicken coop into the temporary greenhouse. Our seedlings did really well and are excited to expand our offerings to include garden starts to you, the backyard gardeners.
Let’s not forget our first crop of Doug Firs and Spruces planted March of 2020. We’ve got some fun pictures of young bucks wearing our tree cages on their antlers. Needless to say, there will be taller fences in the field’s future, too. We get to pick up our next round of evergreens, plus a few varieties of maples and shrubs for our future inventory.
We have done and learned A LOT in 2 short years… and yet have so much more to do. We couldn’t be more excited to officially share a piece of our dreams and add some beauty to our Central Oregon neighbors.
